i seen someone post about the e16 desktop environment and wanted to try it on my laptop,, both on my main pc and on ther ei have kubuntu, but ive never put in the effort to make it look nice at all,,,, ive just made very surface level changes to like the taskbar and window boarder or wahtever,, and i thought e16 looked nice so i wanted to give it a go !!!!

just to make it clear, im a huge huge beginer when it comes to linux-anything,,, i could have totally made mistakes, overcomplicated things, or just misunderstood stuff,, please dont take this to be a guide, its basically just a recalling of my thoughts while i was trying to make this work,,,,,

at first i didnt like the multiple desktops, ive never actaully used someting like that because i was just ever in the position wehre i felt like i needed it, and i found it annoying that when i was trying to click on the scroll bar it jumped to the other one,, once i got into it and had my browser on one and not-fullscreen programs on the other i found it quite useful on the laptops smaller screen,,

i dont know how to feel about the lack of taskbar though, ive always used one and found it very useful, and opening programs is a pain, so ive still got ways to go before i feel comfortable with it,,,

first i had to install e16

i coudlnt just install it through the terminal from the package(?) seemingly, so i looked it up, and its apparently so old its just not there anymore,, ! so i looked it up and i seen some posts on some forums talking about needing to add different repositories in order to use it, so i tried that,,,

i added one and it didint work still

i added a second one and it didnt work,

but not only did it not work, it broke shit, because it was apparently so old tat i could no longer update apt because there was no release file or something,,, so i went on a hunt to see how to do taht, how to update the shit when theres no release file, but this was a waste of time,, this was not the path to take,,,,

i eventually got to the conclusion that i have to install it from the source code !

this was the right call, but i went about it totally wrong,, the shit i installed initally was just like, idk dependancies ? something,,, it wasnt e16 though, and i didnt realise taht, so i went on a big trip around the internet trying to find out how to make e16 work after installing it, despite the fact it wasnt installed,,,

iirc i had to do some "make"ing and some "./configure"ing and some "make install"ing,, not in that order,,, which came back up later guwahhhhh

im greatly shortening the events, i think i blanked out during parts so i cant even recall, but jus tknow this took for ages and ages

i eventually did install e16 though ! after a long ! long long time !!

i didnt have a mouse plugged into my laptop so i was just using my trackpad whcih sucked beacseu i wanted to try all the little buttons on the desktop,, the tool tips,,,,,(?),,,,,,, its wahtever though tehyyre greatly repetative,,

i was surprised by the,, lack of things,,,, twas so, empty,,,,, i had a hard time iwht the settings,, there isnt very mcuh there,, it felt very limited ande it made me want to cry,,, like what could i even do there,,,,, im aleways in my settings for things and stuff like my audio and drawing tablet and langauges, so id need to look into that if i were to ever use it much,,,

i looked at the applications(?) throuh the little menu and i was like, "hmm,, xterm,,,," and i opened it and its very cute, much cuter than konsole, and smaller too so it was nicer on the small laptop screen,,, my ctrl alt t opened konsole though, and so i wanted to change that,, ! so i needed to find how to change shortcuts on e16

this is apparently not in settings, and one has to install a program to do this, e16keyedit,,,,,

this program is apparenly also so old you cannot install it through the terminal, and i had to get it off of enlightenment git,, at first i was hoping to just download a zip or tar.whatever file, but those did not work, so i had to "git clone", whci i dont think ive had to do before,,

i then wanted to make use of these files that were now on my laptop, so i looked at the read me an dit said to use "make", and i was like "waou ok i did this earlier i know this" but apparently no, i don tknow this,, it did not work,,, there was no makefile,,, so i had to find out what to do about that,, an di hear you have to "./configure", like i did earlier ! but that also did not work,, through more searching i then see i need to ewmmmm autoreconf(?)??)? or something, i dont know,, so i had to do that and then ./config and then make and only then did it work, and i could make the binary(?) to bin, like the readme asked,,,,, excpet not really and this took me one million years to do and i kept fucking shit up and i did all of this like 4 times over because it kept being wrong and i tried cmake too but i don tknow why and it didnt work obviosuly fucking an di dont know what i was doing but its ok i got ther ein the end

my sister then asked to play robolox with me, which ido on my laptop so we can sit together while we play, so i decided to do it while on(?) e16 still,,

this was bad, because wile we were playing a scary fnaf roblox horror game, which was very loud, i found out that my volume buttons seemingly do not work anymroe,,, seeing as the settings were so limited, i could not do anyting in there, and since we wanted to play i didnt want to spend one million years looking for a solution online, so i just opened the kde plasma settings and turned the volume down there,, this doesnt seem like an ideal solution though, and is hopefully going ot be temporary,,,

i donwloaded every theme ever also, but i didnt know they would end up in my home or rhwatever, so i wasnt able to find them until i was in the middle of all this, and then i got ot change my theme to a nice one,, i need to choose a fitting wallpaper too, but i already like how it looks,,,

i installed a different file manager too because i had a problem with dolphin,, the rows were coloured black and white, which made the black text very hard to read,, i tried to find for ways to fix this oneline, and ot make the oclour different, but i didnt know how to do taht, and wanted to have a different fm anyway so that the vibes would be different,,, i have no issues with dolphin i think i like it a lot actaully its nice, but it wouldnt fit the aesthetic,,

all in all i think i like e16 so far its cool, and ewm the difficulties are just learning opportunities,,,
